My registration, eighteen years after my father had passed away as an active longshoreman for many years, is not a subject the business incestuous Joint Coast Labor Relations Committee wants to be discussed. To my knowledge it is unprecedented in the Union and PMA's use of the rule. There are legitimate and serious ramifications if others become aware of my situation. So much hate, that really is sad T4000. Oh well. Like I said I really don't have much to cry about. You and that other person who responded are the one's who must be really bored to actually start trying to think of what I look like, which is not even a factor here. Yes, I work at a desk as a legal secretary, I only have to work 3 1/2 days a week and make enough for us to get by and for my husband to be able to quit his GOOD paying job to be a full time casual. No he didn't ask for anything, it was offered to him and LIKE I SAID BEFORE, I KNOW FOR DAMN SURE NONE OF YOU ALL TALKING SHIT WOULD HAVE PASSED IT UP. We own a house, have two beautiful boys and my husband gets to do whatever he want, when he wants to and so do I, we have that respect. Sorry to burst your bubbles. I am not fat or bored. I am able to come to work and play around for a while on the computer, (AND PISS YOU ALL OFF) actually I pretty much have it made here and in my personal life. SORRY. You say your husband is a family man, who works hard and takes care of his own, well, do you think, if he did not pass one of the TABE test and someone sued, and in affect to that lawsuit he would get hired in. Would he pass it up? I don't think so, especially if he is such a family man, he is going to do what is going to benefit his family. I understand that people are upset and made. But what is done is done and if the ILWU does not stay united, the PMA is getting just what they want WAR not PEACE and especially now, there are more important things going on in this world. In response to your plea for fair treatment of T.A.B.E. 4200 failures, of which your husband is one. I would like to present a view from a slightly different perspective.  I am a wife of a 4000, one of the many men who got employment as a casual, the "right" way.

So, I ask you to think about this as well. Yes every man has a right to work, it's not only a right, It’s his duty to his family. My husband is a good family man, a hard worker, never complaining about the job.  He worked at the shipyards before they went bankrupt several years ago, and has had to be self-emplyed since then in order to make ends meet. 

Neither you, nor your husband can conceive of the atrocity that has been committed against hard-working families here. We have all had to make sacrifices much of our lifes to get this far. Our children, who were in high school at the time, had to tutor my husband in math, algebra, and some trig.  He went to LBCC three nights a week for two months for English tutoring, spelling and the likes. It had been more then thirty-five years since he had been out of school, but supporting his family is important to him, so he made the sacrifice to learn what was required to get the job.  He went to work out, so that he could pass the physical tests.

He has been working three and a half years from the casual Hall, he was out six months on injury, but every chance he has, he is at the hall.  Between his own work and the casual hall, he is sometimes working 60 to 80 hours a week.   

In the rainy seasons, the casuals have had to wait hours in the rain day after day till their number finally comes up. He has had to leave family functions, such as holidays and birthday parties to go work at the hall, just so that he doesn't miss any opportunities to have full time employment.  You simply want to dismiss the hard work and sacrifice of the casuals who have had to work their way through the system the "right" way as incidental.  Why should they be upset that your husband has had the opportunity to step right over their heads and move ahead of them in the hiring process without having had to make any of the sacrifices?  Hmm...you don't see the reason for a problem here?  You don't see any reason for resentment?  Your husband has come into the system and had everything handed to him that my husband has had to work so hard to get.

What sacrifices did your husband have to make to receive the gift that he accepted? Did he even enroll at LBCC for tutoring in English? Did he miss family time to study to show himself worthy of that ridiculous test that all the other casuals had to pass?

That's just the surface, Wife of a 4200. They have outlawed that test since, and now everybody gets to come in and make a mockery of every casual that has poured out his heart for this job. Okay, so your husband didn't have to pass the test, and mine did.  In spite of all the hard work and studying, he could probably overlook that fact with a little complaining.  But to add insult to injury, the 4200 TABE failures were awarded hours and money putting them ahead of many of the casuals who worked hard to get in the "right" way.  

If a 4200 TABE failure cannot drive a UTR, you know what the dispatchers do for them? they have them wait for basic longshore work, If the 4200 failure cannot clerk, they make him/her wait and pick up a UTR job. the ones who passed the "right" way don't get these priviledges.They had to perform ALL jobs ,or flop !  

One Woman (who did not pass the tests) turned over a tractor and trailer flipping a U turn under the crane, She didn't even get fired for that. My husband tells me that there are casuals who have gotten fired for not to circling one container as a clerk. It seems that the 4200's are untouchable.

There is another group of 4200s that have been waiting some 4 years now, some of them have a little over 100 hours, they came in "Honorably".  How many "easy money" hours did your husband get, and accept? I have respect for the 4200's that waited the 4 or so years to receive his/her card. But I have little or no respect for the individual who used this "opportunity" to step over the hard work and dedication of others just to make his life easy.  Is his life easy now?

Wife of a 4200, maybe there was only one who started the lawsuit that got all the failures in, but you have just classified your own husband in the "johnny howard class"  Ask any casual with any integrity about jh, and they will tell you that he is unmotivated, lazy, inconsiderate, he has little regard for people.  Many of the 4200's that are in the hall today, were NOT offered money and additional hours because they PASSED the tabe tested.  What kind of sense does that make?

So since you are asking the people on this site to be understanding with regard to YOUR situation, perhaps you can extend your expanded view to include yourself.  YOU need to understand why there are a lot of angry casuals out their.  Don't expect them to simply shrug their shoulders and say "Oh well, she's right", they have invested their lives to accomplish that which your husband got for free.  I'm afraid that makes it a little too difficult to just accept the situation "philosophically.... I'm afraid it's going to take a lot longer for this wound to heal.  It's still in the festering stages.

I got in the H early 4000's back in 1997 but I have another job so I only have about 100 hours.  That's OK because I make good money now but I want to have my card for when I retire, so I keep it current.  So, if I had failed the TABE test like a moron then I could have been in the Union like all the others in my group and I could have quit my job earlier.  The Union is going to fall because of infighting and frivolous lawsuits...we are our own worst enemy.  The only people who will win in the end are the lawyers and PMA.  God save the working man

I came across this site purely by accident and decided to check it out. I was totally discussed in the threats and shit talking that I came across. My husband is a 4200 and he is a very hard worker, he has never flopped once and never complains about the work. Yes, he did not pass ONE of the TABE test and was very dissapointed because he knew that his opportunity to become a Longshoreman was over and had to accept it, his fault for not passing, should of studied harder in the English part of it. Well, when the lawsuit came about, he was one of the first to say that it was wrong, we didn't pass, we didn't pass. But come on, he is a family man, he is not going to pass up such a good opportunity and I don't think ANYONE of you shit talkers would either, especially if you have a family to support. No, he doesn't think the lawsuit was right, being given the hours was really not right and the money really, really not right. The whole damn thing was not right, but damn if anyone is going to pass it up. It is not the 4200s who brought this up, it was one man or maybe one group of people that brought this lawsuit up and if your gonna be doing the hating, hate the PMA their most responsible for the outcome of the lawsuit.
